Abatements -- метки позора, знаки бесчестия, знак опалы, немилости -- понижающие знаки/метки Иногда используется термин «rebatements». Метки придаваемые в герб лица, совершившего позорный поступок. Они имеют вид «вырезанных» из герба областей щита, что достигается их закрашиванием темно-красной (sanguine) или рыжей (tenné) эмалями, в отношении которых старые авторы используют определение «staynande colours». Всего указывается девять таких областей щита, которые при иной раскраске рассматриваются уже не как позорные, но в качестве почётных прибавлений:

Поскольку использование герба не является обязательным, владельцу такого «отличия» проще отказаться от герба, чем демонстрировать собственный позор. Соответственно, указанные выше отличия, представлены по видимости лишь в геральдической теории и не подкреплены достоверными описаниями их реального использования. Однако, указанные термины будут пояснены в соответсвующих разделах. По мнению некоторых авторов, к подобным понижающим знакам могут быть отнесены рабитое (broken) стропило или обращенные в левую сторону звери.
