В обычном положении стрела стрела располоагается в столб острием вниз, т.е. в падении (falling, фр. tombante), но, для предотвращения ошибки, лучше упоминать это обстоятельство, потому что во французских гербах обычно обратное положение стрелы. Когда стрела на взлёте говорится, что она острием вверх (with point upwards). Стрелы могут быть зазубренные (?) (barbed, фр. ferré) или вооруженные (armed, фр. armé) при отличии в цвете наконечника; оперёными (flighted, feathered, фр. empenné) также зазубренные (?) (notched, nooked, фр. encoché), когда цветом выделен налагаемый на тетиву конец стрлы. Цвет стрелы указывается по древку (shaft), но француские геральдисты иногда указывают «с древком … тинктур» (shafted, фр. futé).

При изображении пучков (bundles) стел они нередко именуются « sheaves of arrows» (при этом число и положение стрел иногда оговаривается.

Птичьи стрелы (bird-bolt) для лука и арбалета также отличаются: они не имеют острого наконечника и заканчиваются массивным утолщения и поэтому могут быть описаны как «тупоголовые» (blunt-headed). Старофранцуское слово «boson» обозначает, вилимо, то е самое.

Широкая (broad) отличается, возможно, от упомянутых выше и сходна с pheon (см.), кроме отсутствующих с внутренней стороны лепестков зубчатого края. Но под этим термином подразумевается только наконечник. Короткие арбалетные стрелы носят названия bolt и quarrel.
