champagne us. translated as a terrace in base. Common in Fr., but rare in Eng. It resembles a chief, but is placed in the base part of the shield. It is frequently used to act as a support to castles, towers and trees, and is similar to montagne (qv). The term derives from Lat *campania, from campus, plain. It should not be confused with the Eng. term champaine, which is synonymous with urdy, ie. a line of partition similar to embattled, but with the top and bottom pointed instead of square, and having the appearance of the lines in a vairy shield. On la nomme aussi plaine. 1843 Pièce qui occupe à peu près le tiers inférieur de l'écu. 1872 ou Plaine. Partie formée d'un trait horizontal au bas de l'écu. 1885 Cette pièce, qui occupe le tiers inférieur de l'écu, est rarement employée en armoiries; aussi peu d'auteurs la placent-ils au nombre des pièces honorable ou du premier ordre. 1887 Pièce héraldique formée par un trait horizontal qui coupe le bas de l'écu. Elle a deux parties des huit de la hauteur de l'écu. 1899 Pièce qui occupe le bas de l'écu dans la proportion d'un tiers environ de sa hauteur ; il ne faut pas la confondre avec la plaine qui est un diminutif de la champagne, ni avec la terrasse dont le bord du haut est sinueux. 1901 Section de la pointe de l'écu, occupant le huitième de la surface de ce dernier.
