 Champagne (ou Campagne) - Pièce honorable qui occupe le tiers de l'écu vers la pointe. Il ne faut pas la confondre avec la plaine qui est un diminutif de la champagne, dimensions réduites (2 modules), ni avec la terrasse comportant un bord supérieur sinueux. Cette pièce, comme les autres, peut être crénelée, engrelée mais non bastillée. Selon certains il ne s'agit que d'une seule pièce, la plaine et la champagne. La champagne et la plaine diffèrent de la terrasse, de la mer et de la rivière en ce que les premières ont les bords supérieurs unis et que les secondes ont des aspérités ou sinuosités arrondies. 1772 C'est l'espace en bas d'un tiers de l'écu. Le pere Menestrier dit que la champagne est rare en armoiries. 1780 Est une figure qui occupe environ le tiers de l'écu vers la pointe. On la nomme aussi plaine. 1843 Pièce qui occupe à peu près le tiers inférieur de l'écu. 1872 ou Plaine. Partie formée d'un trait horizontal au bas de l'écu. 1885 Cette pièce, qui occupe le tiers inférieur de l'écu, est rarement employée en armoiries; aussi peu d'auteurs la placent-ils au nombre des pièces honorable ou du premier ordre. 1887 Pièce héraldique formée par un trait horizontal qui coupe le bas de l'écu. Elle a deux parties des huit de la hauteur de l'écu. 1899 Pièce qui occupe le bas de l'écu dans la proportion d'un tiers environ de sa hauteur ; il ne faut pas la confondre avec la plaine qui est un diminutif de la champagne, ni avec la terrasse dont le bord du haut est sinueux. 1901 Section de la pointe de l'écu, occupant le huitième de la surface de ce dernier. La champagne diminuée se nomme plaine.
