comble narrow chief; not rare in France. The term derives from the Fr. for roofing timber (as does chevron, qv.), and, as well as its use as a narrow chief, is often used in blazon in the same way, ie. to "support" a chief and to separate it from a field which would cause it to be cousu (qv). When used in this way, there does not seem to be an Eng. equivalent, although P uses combel or fillet. The filet in Fr., however, is a diminutive of a cotice. [FRENCHGLOSSAR]
