Fusil веретено (фр. fuseau и fusée), по своей естественной форме и значению это - веретено из ручной прялки, но по своей геометрической форме это - удлинённый ромб, и из-за этого довольно часто веретено путают с другой геральдической фигурой. В различных гербах веретено изображали по-разному, и изображения одного и того же герба, относящиеся к различным временам, отличались друг от друга. In an ordinary way the conventional fusil is the one to be drawn. In French armorial blazon the name fuseau seems to be reserved for the true spindle, while the fusée is used for the conventional form. In its primitive form, as in the arms of BADLAND, afterwards assumed by HOBY, it is represented as in the margin(fig. 1). The family of TREFUSIS bear another variety of the fusil(fig. 2); but the usual term for such is spindle, q.v.; while the heraldic fusil is drawn as fig. 3. The fusil does not appear in the rolls of arms, so far as been observed, before the time of Edward III.

Но какие бы правила ни были составлены, они редко остаются неизменными, как, например, вид веретена и форма щита, претерпели изменения. Очень често веретёна располагались в гербах по нескольку штук, соединённые conjoined в виде пояса, перевязи, креста, или косого креста. Перевязь из веретён должна состоять из пяти целых веретён, и двух половинок, каждое отдельное веретено положено сообразно левой перевязи. The fesse fusil should have five perfect fusils, and the cross, as already pointed out(see cross, §8), should consist of nine, five of which should be entire. But, as will be observed, an ordinary is often described «of so many fusils.» В поясе веретёна естественно все вертикальны, в перевязи они нарисованы от правого угла по диагональной линии, пересекающей щит, в кресте из веретён все веретёна расположены вертикально, в то время как в косом кресте они расходятся от центра щита.

Далее, множество несоответствий в терминологии. A fesse, bend, или cross fusil используются вместо терминов a fesse, bend, или cross, составленных из множества веретён: также часто в этом же самом значении используется термин fusilly, но, как отмечалось в ст. cross, §8, это некорректно. Составленный из веретён Fusilly (фр.fusilé) - вполне определённый термин, относящийся к полю, и обязательно должны быть названы две тинктуры, как в гербе PATTEN, данном ниже. Применение этого термина к ряду веретён (с названной единственной тинктурой) соответственно полностью неверно, но обычай совершенно свободно допускает это (без сомнения через попустительство высших инстанций), так что ошибка стала почти правилом.
