-alisier, alizier sorb apple tree, service tree. Sorbus domesticus, in the same family as the whitebeam, and is often confused with the rowan, sorbus aucuparia. The alisier and the cormier, a regional var., are species of sorbus, which has become the service tree by a process of folk etymology in English. It produces a bland edible fruit, and the wood is used for making the handles of tools.
