- HERRING. A small sea-fish. P. 32, f. 13.  This is also blazoned a Cob-Fish, or Sea-Cob. (ELVN)

Herring сельдь (фр. hareng, старофр. hairaing),встречается чаще из-за игры слов, связанной с названием, в раннюю эпоху. The cob, слово, которое также связано с каламбуром, вероятно, означало молодую сельдь, хотя термин использовался для молоди других рыб.

«Gules, a chevron wavy between three cob-fish naiant argent, on a chief of the last two sea-cobs[or gulls] sable[and in one case given as two shovellers sable beaked and legged or]» – COBB, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire.

Из того же семейства (clupeidœ) , что и сельдь, - другие рыбы, которые встречаются в геральдике, а именно the sprat (килька), the garvin (?), и the spalding (город в Англии??), которое, возможно, встречается реже всех, просто местное название. Также к этому семейству относится the pilchard (сардина) (нем. pelzer, лат. clupea pilchardus).
