Как уже сказано в ст. Mullet, в древних гербовниках слово «rowel» по значению и взаимозаменяемо с «estoile». Возьмём пять гербовников, которые в основном исп. при выборе примеров: a) the Roll of Henry III. in the Royal College of Arms, b) that preserved in a copy by Leland and similar to that in the Harleian Collection, c) the Roll of the siege of Carlaverock, d) the Rolls of Edw. II., e) the Rolls of of Edw. III. Случаи использования трёх терминов выглядят следующим образом:

Поскольку в гербовниках представлены гербы главных родов, многие из них повторяются в двух или трёх перечнях, неравное распределение указывает на произвольное испоьзование терминов, хотя слово «mullet» исп. наиболее часто и во всех пяти гербовниках. Примеры показывают, что термины «mullet» и «rowel», по видимости, используются без разбора в гербах одного семейства. Нет достаточных доказательств о связи термина с наличием или отсутствием просквожения (см. в ст. Mullet pierced), хотя,похоже, древние рисунки таковы. См. Spur-rowel.

Современный термин «spur-rowel» иногда использыется.

«Argent, two spur-rowels in chief pierced of the field, and a spear's head in base azure» – AUCHMUTY.

Термин «roelé» в гербе Rauf de GORGES имеет значение «whirlpool» (см. Gurges), но в гербовнике времён Эдуарда II это относится к роду несущему «muscles».
