PALMER or Pilgrims were soldiers that had served in the Crusades or holywar.
They were so called because they generally brought home a branch of palm of the growth of Palestine, and wore it as a sacred badge and token that they had performed their vows, either by fighting against the infidels, or visiting the Holy Sepulchre. (ELVN)
