CYPHERS. Initial letters variously inter-twined.

               The Orest is generally placed above them. Cyphers, used at funerals of women, are small escutcheons of silk, or buckram, whereon are painted the initial letters of the deceased, placed within a bordure. Cyphers-reversed. P. 39, f. 31. (ELVN)
