Jacob's staff Посох Якова

Термин обычно сопровождается добавочным термином, характеризующим его предназначение: Pilgrim's staff или Palmer's staff (см.). Рike-staf обычно изображается подобно паломническому посоху, но без крючка; flag-staff; quarter-staff исп. лесниками и т.д. Cross-staff (см.) и pastoral-staff, см Crosier. Иногда разновидности посоха используются как древко знамени или жезл (см. в ст. Paschal Lamb); a crozier с посохом той же тинкутры и т.д.

Суковатый посох (staff raguly или ragged-staff) встречается часто и подразумевает ветвь дерева с обрубленными ветвями, похожий на палицу (club). Обычно рисуется уороченным и описывается термином «trunked»; хотя лучше для описания будет «fesse» или «bend raguly. Нередко изображается пылающим (flammant), но лучший варинат описания «fire-brand raguly».

Встречаются своеобразные названия, нпр. Jacob's staff (возможно shepherd's crook, но м.б. и St.James' pilgrim's staff); crutch staff т.е. костыль (potent) и Jedburgh staff. Патриарший посох увенчан таковым же крестом см. Cross §28.

:«Gules, on a horse salient argent furnished azure a chevalier armed at all points grasping in the right hand a kind of lance called the Jedburgh staff proper» – Burgh of JEDBURGH, Scotland.

Термин «шест» (staves) исп. в заначении рукоять топора. см battle-axe, (луше термин «hafted»). Также называют лучи карбункула (см. escarboucle). Иногда исп. по отн к ветвям, см. Tree.

К посохам могут быть отнесены палица (club, фр. massue), см. Mace, и дубинка (truncheon); первая обычна для изображений дикаря (savage) или лесоруба (woodman см. Man), и редко встречается с ними в роли щитодержателей. Палица может изображатьсятаким образом, что шибочно принимается за сосульку (icicle). See Gouttes.

Термин «шесты» используется в смысле рукояток осей. См. Боевой топор, (более подходящий термин). Также из лучей эскарбука, q.v. Staved также применяется к ветвям; См. Раздел «Дерево».
