О делении гербового поля на четыре части в виде креста, реже – косого креста. Термин «quarterly» встречается в старых гербовниках, линии деления подвержены многим измениям, подобно геральдическим фигурам. Полученные части нумеруются, начиная с правого верхнего; очень часто части 1 и 4, а также 2 и 3 содержат одинаковые гербы. При описание частей составного герба указывается номер каждой из них.

Геральдические фигуры т. ж. могут быть четверочастно разделены, например глава, при этом, видимо, фигуры адаптируются (по форме и расположению) под сжатые части. Пояс и стропило редко подвергаются такому делению, крест – чаще всего; иногда положенный поверх четверочастного поля крест имеет окраску переменных с полем цветов (counterchanged, иногда ошибочно описывается как counterquartered). Термин «quarterly» иногда исп. по отн. четверочастно скошенному щиту (partition per saltire, фр. ecartelé en sautoir), но это излишне, т.к. достаточно определения «per saltire».

«Per saltire, ermine and erminois, on a chief gules a martlet between two roses or» – GOLDRIND, Baronetcy, 1841.
«Per saltire, argent and vert a pale counterchanged» – STABLES.
«Quarterly quartered» – используется по отн. к косвенному кресту в котором проезведены одновременно деление четверочастное и четверочастноскошенное, но такой герб может с равным успехом описываться и как «saltire gyronny of eight». Другое описание даётся для герба епископа Монтегю (Montague) после объединения кафедр Бат (Bath) и Уэлса (Wells), а именно «per saltire quartered». См. Saltire.
