Génitoire:

  • 1899 г. — «Nous n’avons trouvé qu’un seul exemple de cette figure, elle est par conséquent fort rarement employée en armoiries. Colleoni : coupé d’argent et de gueules, à trois paires de génitoires ouvertes, de l’un à l’autre. (Voir ouvert)».

Коллеони:

This post has nothing to do with the Georgian heraldry. I just decided to post my rendering of one of my favorite coat of arms which belongs to the famous Colleoni family. The family came to prominence in 15th century Italy when it produced one of the most famous Italian condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni (c. 1395/1400 — 2 November 1475). The Colleoni coat of arms is fascinating because, punning on his own name which sounds similar to coglioni (testicles), Bartolomeo included three sets of them :D Judging from his biography, he certainly had «balls»…

Base on Giovanni Santi-Mazzini’s Stona, linguaggio, sìmboli e significati dei blasoni e delle armi (Milano, 2003), I rendered the original version the Colleoni arms:

Баччо наш Коллеони пошел еще дальше. Мало ему было портретных изображений его небожественного лика — так он решил увековечить свои… э-э-э… koglioni! ([1])

The shield beneath the fountain/cup. This is why many people date the deck to 1460—1470, to sit comfortably within Colleoni’s lifetime, but after the Visconti-Sforza was made.

Friday, June 29, 2012 I Coglioni di Colleoni The first time I posted a photo of Colleoni’s statue (27 July 2011), Anonymous asked about Colleoni’s symbol, which is a play on his name. Andrew informed us that the symbol on the coat of arms is a pair of testicles, but regretted that he didn’t have a photo. So, when I was there in May, I set out to correct that omission. So here it is — not one, but three pairs of testicles. In heraldry, this is referred to as a canting coat of arms. Colleoni’s coat of arms is the one on the left on the pedestal in the photo above.
