cheval marin seahorse. In French blazon any animal with the tail of a fish is termed mariné. A mermaid is also termed mariné. In the few examples where it is found in Fr. civic heraldry, the seahorse is the true marine animal, and not the fabulous hippopotamus, with the head and body of a horse and the tail of a fish. FRGL
