Athough Buffon may have given the badger the not entirely unjustified reputation of being 'a lazy, suspicious and solitary' beast, the emblem of sleep, in the Far East it bears a completely different character. In Japan the badger is the symbol of cunning and of innocent deception. The Japanese believe that the badger drums on its stomach at the time of the full moon and disguises itself as an aged monk to trick its victims. They use the expression 'old badger' (furudanuki) in much the same way as we would call somebody an 'old fox' (applied most notably to the famous Shogun leyasu Tokugawa). Figures of potbellied badgers are sometimes set at the entrances of Japanese restaurants, sly emblems of prosperity or of selfsatisfaction (OGRJ).
In the Mabinogion, Gwawl, Pwyll's rival for the love of Rhiannon, is, during the course of a contest of wildly varying fortunes, shut in a magic sack, which each of Pwyll's followers beats with his staff. This is what the Welsh account calls 'the game of the badger in the bag'. The animal's symbolism is here taken in its negative sense, to extract no clearer definition (MABG p. 24). It would seem that the purpose of the game was to symbolize the punishment inflicted upon the man - the badger in the bag - for the badgerish qualities in him, namely slyness and deceit. He was beaten with staves to beat the badger out of him; to get rid of his ill-will and deceit.

В символическом отношении отличается тем, что обитает в темной норе ("боится света") и существует "за счет своего собственного жира". Это сделало его, как и крота, обозначением порока алчности. Народные образные выражения, например в немецком языковом пространстве: "спать, как барсук", свидетельствуют о его хитрости. Непочтительных, нахальных молодых парней называют ("дерзкими барсуками"). Жир барсука уже в античные времена применяли для медицинских целей.

Привычка барсука жить обособленно и скрытно закрепила за ним образ коварного проныры и в западноевропейском фольклоре. Термин "барсучить", в английском языке означающий "раздражать, тревожить", происходит от сомнительного английского развлечения - травли барсуков собаками.

Китай
Лунное животное относится к полюсу "инь" и означает сверхъестественные силы, коварство и игривость.
Япония
В японской традиции обладал сверхъестественными силами - Fata morgana и источник ignes fatui Ловкий хитрец со злобным характером, герой множества сказок, часто изображается в них как эгоист, заботящийся лишь о своем брюхе.
Христианство
Как и крот, символ алчности.
