AURIFLAMME, or ORIFLAMME. The ancient banner of St. Denis, carried at the head of the French armies, from the 12th to the 15th century. According to Sir N. H. Nicolas, an oblong red Hag, split into five points, described by others as a square banner of flame-coloured silk. (ELVN)
