MOUNTAIN, or Montese Cress. A plain cross humettée. P. 8, f. 28. (ELVN)
montagne mountain; mount. Sometimes depicted naturalistically, and sometimes as a «montagne de trois coupeaux (qv.)», when it is shown as three rounded hillocks issuant from base, the centre higher than those in the flanks. This way of drawing a mount is common in continental heraldry, although rare in England. The number of coupeaux is not fixed at three, although this is the normal number. A «montagne de six coupeaux» is known as a montjoie, which in non-heraldic terms is a cairn, or a pile of stones which represents an important event, and which is often surmounted by a cross.
