In botanical terms the nigella is a genus of ranunculaceæ, especially the fennel-flower (N. sativa) and love-in-a-mist (N. damascena), both of which contain black seed (Lat. niger, dim. nigellus, black). Here, the heraldic cinquefoil seems to suffice.
