Это животное встречалось в водоёмах чаще, нежели теперь, и охота на выдр была любимым развлечением. Ручей близ The stream near Хексема (Hexham) назывался Otterbourne, от которого получила своё прозвание упомянутая ниже семья. Выдры присутствуют в гербах нескольких семей. Две выдры щитодержателя в гербе NORREYS представлены с ошейниками и цепями, каждая пожирающая (devouring) рыбу, как можно видеть на витраже в Окевеллсе (Ockwells in Berkshire). Как щитодержатели в гербе SALTERS' Company они представлены чёрными, усыпанными византинами с герцогскими коронами и цепями на шее, пожирающими рыбу. Две восстающие выдры естественных цветов держат щит Бэлфуров из Оркни (BALFOUR of Orkney) и Kinloch. Фамилия Luttrell несёт выдр как аллюзию на французское имя; вероятно морской пёс (см.) является выдрой.
