cross of Lorraine; a cross double traversed. The Cross of Lorraine is said to derive from a relic of the True Cross and is first found on banners of Anjou in fourteenth century. The upper bar of the cross represents the title written by Pilate and placed above Christ’s head. The cross double traversed became popular in Lorraine as a result of its use at the battle of Nancy, and later became associated with the cult of Jeanne d’Arc.
