In blazoning a sword in coat armour, its position must always be mentioned ; whether the point is upwards or downwards, towards the dexter or sinister, etc. See examples. P. 31, f. 30, to 35, and P. 9, f. 21. When the handle and pommel (i.e. the knob affixed to the handle) are of a different tincture, it it is termed hilted and pommelled. Обычная форма – длинный прямой коинок с крестовидной рукоятью, помещаемый в герб различным образом, который должен быть точно оговорён. Меч – символ Лондона, иногда называемый мечом Св. Павла, апостола и святого патрона города. Клинок может быть волнистым, окровавленным (embrued) и т.д. Клинок часто показан пронзающим сердце человека или животное. Рукоять и яблоко также часто поименовываются, в случае отличия их по цвету от самого меча. Меч в обычном представлении – серебряный с золотыми рукоятью и яблоком.
