Bicéphale Attribut d'un animal (généralement l'aigle) qui a deux têtes; celles-ci sont ordinairement tournées l'une à dextre et l'autre à senestre. On peut rencontrer des tricéphales ou plus, l'hydre par exemple a sept têtes. 1905 Se dit des monstres à deux têtes.

• «Although the emblem is ancient, its use became important in 1494, when the struggle between the Guelphs (supporters of the Pope, and bearing the lion) and the Ghibellines (supporters of the Emperor, and bearing the eagle) came to an end. At first it was decided to use a griffin (part eagle, part lion) to denote peace in the Empire, but within a short space of time the double headed eagle was chosen to signify the claim to supreme power over the Pope and the Empire».
