chaîne chain. The chains of Navarre are placed in cross in saltire and in orle, with an emerald in the centre. They are closely connected with the escarboucle (qv.), and in fact, it is probable that they derive from it, and became associated with chains after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), when Sancho VII of Navarra breached the chains surrounding a Moorish camp.
